At the Serrano Law Firm, we have helped hundreds of injured, sick and disabled persons throughout Connecticut and the Springfield - Holyoke - Northampton area of Massachusetts get Social Security Disability or SSI benefits. If your or your child's claim for disability has been denied, call us at 860 236-9350. We have 30 years experience helping clients win the benefits they need when physical or mental impairments leave them unable to work.
We have won benefits for individuals with many different types of disabilities, including:
Our federal government knows that illness and injury keeps many people from being able to work before they reach their normal retirement age. The government tries to help these workers by providing Social Security Disability Benefits. The government provides Supplemental Security Income (SSI) for disabled people who cannot work but do not qualify for Social Security Disability because they have not worked long enough. Disabled children can also qualify for SSI.
There are many reasons why your application for Social Security benefits may have been denied. The person who decided your case may have overlooked important facts in your medical records. Important medical or other records may be missing from your case file. It may have been decided that you can return to past work because the difficulty of your job may not have been understood. It may have been unclear how your physical and psychological conditions prevent you from doing even simple, light work. There may be technical reasons why you do not qualify. You may not have enough quarters of work history or you may have claimed a date of disability that is too early or too late.
Social Security Disability law is complex. Along with being familiar with the federal statutes and the many federal regulations that govern applications for disability cases, the best disability attorneys must be able to read medical reports and understand diseases, physical impairment and other medical conditions.

You will qualify for disability benefits if you can prove that physical or psychiatric disabilities, or both together, make you unable to work according to Social Security's rules. You will be entitled to benefits if your condition is so bad that you meet or equal the level of severity that Social Security has listed for your condition. You will also win your disability case if you cannot do even the easiest job you had during the 15 years before you became disabled and you cannot do other work because of your age, education, past work experience, lack of transferable skills, and poor physical condition.
We have won benefits for adult clients with many different types of physical disabilities, including asthma, diabetes, herniated disks and other lumbar and cervical (back and neck) problems, arthritis, heart problems, fibromyalgia, sleep apnea, HIV and AIDS, cancer, hepatitis, cirrhosis and other liver conditions, brain injuries, multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, lupus, vision problems and hearing loss.
From our 30 years of experience, we know that a successful psychiatric disability case requires particular care and attention. Unlike physical disability cases, there are no "objective" tests such as x-rays to prove psychological impairment. We have success with these mental health cases, including claims for anxiety, agoraphobia, panic attacks, depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorders and mental retardation.
As Social Security Disability lawyers, we help families who apply for SSI children's benefits in Connecticut and Western Massachusetts present their disability cases as strongly as possible to the Social Security Administration. We know the law and the regulations for child cases. We know how to present your child's medical conditions, such as asthma, or psychiatric conditions, such as ADHD or ODD, to help families obtain SSI child benefits so they can have the resources needed to help their children.
To qualify for benefits from Social Security, your child must be found disabled and your family must have income and financial resources that are below certain amounts. Children that qualify for disability payments receive benefits called Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
Your child can have an impairment that is severe enough to meet or equal the list of medical conditions that Social Security maintains for the major body systems. For example, your child will qualify for SSI disability if he or she has asthma and, despite taking medication and following doctor's instructions, your child still has at least 6 asthma attacks per year that are severe enough to require a trip to the emergency room or a physician.
Your child is found to have an extreme impairment in one of the following areas (Social Security calls these areas of functioning "domains") or a marked impairment in two of the areas:
For an adult to qualify for SSI (Supplemental Security Income) benefits, he or she must meet the same rules for physical or psychiatric impairment that are required to qualify for Social Security Disability.
SSI is available to adults who have not worked enough time before their disability started to have paid into the Social Security system. SSI applicants must meet certain maximum household asset and income limits.
Benefits for SSI cannot be paid before the date of the SSI application.
